Earth Day

Tuesday, April 22, was Earth Day, so Mrs. DelToro’s Hands-On Geography elective class finished their unit by holding a gallery walk of their finished National Park Dioramas. The dioramas included having 2 types of small animals, 2 types of large animals, a fish species, 2 types of birds, 2 types of flowers, 2 types of trees, and then 2 types of recreation that can be enjoyed within the specific national park the students researched. The project also showed ways to respect and safely enjoy the national parks.

Students not only made a diorama but also created a national parks poster telling about when their park opened, where it’s located in the United States, as well as unique features found there.

A total of 23 out of the 63 US national parks located were represented in the gallery walk.

Here is what students in the class had to say about the project:

Naleah Jim-Tiscareno stated, "My favorite part of the project was deciding what part of Sequoia National Park I was going to create and then planning and building my diorama."

"My favorite part of the national parks project was finding out about all the national parks there are in the United States.  I learned a lot about Acadia National Park which is located in the northern Appalachian Mountains in Maine," stated Noah Wishteyah.

Kellan Manion said, “It was a lot of fun! I used Teddy Grahams for my bears and Goldfish for my fish!”

Nora Kesl said, “I had fun creating my own diorama, but I really liked seeing what everyone in the class came up with for their project too!”
